Description
A lumbar puncture is a diagnostic medical procedure in which a long needle is inserted into the spinal cavity. The purpose is generally to obtain cerebrospinal fluid for diagnostic testing.
The main purpose of lumbar puncture is to diagnose diseases of the central nervous system, including the brain and spine, such as meningitis and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Sometimes a lumbar puncture itself is used as a therapy.
